National Post Could Close

Published by Toronto Mike on October 29, 2009 @ 18:03 in News

postThe National Post could close after tomorrow.

Creditors of the company have indicated they are no longer prepared to fund continuing losses at the Post, which employs 277 people, Canwest said.

The creditor group “will not continue to support funding the National Post Company in the long or short term past Oct. 30, 2009,” Canwest said in a court report released Thursday.

I don't read the National Post, but I'll be sorry to see it go because it was always the paper most likely to write about me. There was this time this time and this time and this time.

By the way, The New York Times calls The National Post "Canada's cheeky conservative paper". I think "cheeky" is being kind. It was more like Canada's Fox News paper.

"Canada's Fox News paper?" There is a much higher percentage of libertarian-leaning columnists at the Post than at the neo-con dominated Fox. The NP has continuously criticized the Canadian government from both the 'left' (Don Martin) and the 'right' (Terence Corcoran). And unlike the Star, their editorial board waits until after the election is called before they endorse a politician.

I will certainly miss being able to find the writings of Corcoran, Gunter, Solomon and Jonas all in the same spot.

Not a big Canwest fan, Hate to see people lose their jobs.

Part of Globals money woes have been tied to the publishing side of things,

Political leanings aside (and I'll add that they'll rip Harper any day - despite what many may think), the Post can have a little fun (especially in their Arts section) while still providing great content (especially the FP). That and the visual aspect of the paper is second to none in the Canadian market. Will miss, if it goes.

As a Winnipegger, I shouldn't be happy to see Canwest die (since they started here) but all I gotta say is: to hell with them. I can't stand Canwest.

When the National Post launched, the ongoing joke was "subscribe and get free glasses" or something to that effect since the type was so small.

I never read it, never have, never will. Their sports section was useless, and their comics weren't funny.

Oh well.

I don't think it will close. They'll probably be fine.

I just hate the way they display the writer's pictures.
The paper also seems pretty pompous but so does the Star.
The Sun is just too self-centred.

Very sad to see fellow media members get hosed for their jobs. Reality is, the paper isn't very good; that's the reason people don't buy it. In addition (another reality) Canada just isn't a big enough place to support two national newspapers. Finally, any paper that gives Lord Windbag (aka Conrad Black) a regular platform seriously compromises any credibility it may be striving for.

I only really read the Post for Bruce Arthur's columns. I hope he lands somewhere else if this goes down.

Mike, I disagree. Conservatism in Canada isn't the same as in the US, thus the Post isn't Fox News. I would say the Star is far more in line with Fox news: each is prone to hysterics, regularly manipulating the emotions of their audiences. And one more thing - the funeral hasn't even been held, and the "voice of the GTA" was all over the tv last night, ready to scoop up the Post's subscription list. Yea, good business but so tacky. Frankly, I hope NP survives.

The National Post was a breath of fresh air in Canadian print media not being that dogmatic, so it would be sad to lose them. But they've always seemed like outsiders sometimes printing rigidly conservative articles.

It's October 31st - has the NP published a paper today?
