Maple Leafs 1, Canucks 3

Published October 25, 2009 @ 09:58 in Toronto Maple Leafs

leafsThe worst start in franchise history has us winless after 8 games. Last night, we stormed out of the gate, outshooting Vancouver 8-1. Then, we decided to play the rest of the period on the PK.

Five penalties in a row for a team that sucks at killing penalties. We're lucky we escaped the period down by only two goals. If you're still keeping track at home, it's now 13-2 in first periods this season, for the bad guys.

Joey Mac wasn't bad, but he's clearly not the answer. The poor guy only has 17 career wins. Our answer is a guy with zero career wins. The Monster will end this streak of futility tomorrow night in Anaheim.

I moved here from Winnipeg in 1976. I left the WHA-champion Winnipeg Jets, with the likes of the Hull-Hedberg-Nilsson line behind. Say what you want about the WHA (especially in Toronto), but there was some excellent hockey played in that league. Some really crappy hockey, too.

I was excited about seeing my first NHL game - the Leafs at the Gardens. The game wasn't very good; the Leafs, worse. Yes, they lost.

I think it is safe to say that from that date, I have never cheered for the Leafs, let alone be a fan.

Harold Ballard had it correct when he said that there was no reason whatsoever to invest/spend more for a winning team, because that would not make him any more money.

To this day, the only way to tell the Leafs organization (is that an oxymoron) "ENOUGH!" is to hit them in the money belt and refuse to financially support that awful team in any way, shape or form. The most expensive ticket in hockey, if not pro sports in North America and one of the most profitable teams. They're crap. So what. Why change a thing when you're making tens of millions off of ultimately unwilling to look in another direction "fans"?

I salute the Leafs with my right arm held up into the air and my left arm out to the left - making the big L salute they have so earned and deserve.

As bad as they have started i thought they played better Saturday than they have. Yes still killing themselves with penalties. But at least we had that first burst of energy. I predict they win a game.
Someday.
