Billy Bragg - A New England
Most people know "A New England" as a Kirsty MacColl song, but that version is actually a cover of this Billy Bragg original.

Courageously, Bragg has admitted he stole the melody from Thin Lizzy.

I have to firmly disagree with that statement. I didn't find out about the Kristy version for eons while most people I converse with music about would know that Billy Bragg song. Billy is a legend, and more people know his body of work than you seemingly imply.

Maybe it's my complete obsession with Fairytale of New York that had me discover the Kirsty MacColl version.

Here it is, for the interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fwtFSEovro

Love this song (bother versions), thanks!!! New to the site, I've spent a few hours pouring over it tonight... love what you have to say and agree with almost all of it - especially the cfny stuff :) Will drop in on a regular basis...

I too very much like "Fairytale of New York"

I don't know though. I think Bragg's version is, at least, just as much known to people. Who knows.
