Fairplay with Mario, Tony and Bea

memoryYouTube user Retrontario frequently uploads fantastic retro-Toronto-centric gems. These clips never fail to bring back a ton of memories for me, so I feature them from time to time.

Back in 1988, Shopper's Drug Mart ran a PSA encouraging fair play. It starred Pittsburgh Penguin great Mario Lemieux, Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Tony Fernandez and Bea Arthur, who recently passed on.

The premise is faulty, as playing fair doesn't in fact make us all winners, but seeing these three together in one spot make this ad a winner.

You have to follow this up with Roberto Alomar's McCain Fruit Punch commercial....

Or even better, the George Bell McDonald's ad.

Brian Linehan (RIP) told me that Bea slept with both of them after the shoot.

I kid, but he did have dinner one night with Bea at a swank Toronto restaurant. After a couple of bottles, Bea thought it would be fun to proclaim at full volume:

"Brian, did I ever tell you what a c*nt Betty White is?".

Brian, one of the greatest people I've met in this business, managed to put out the fire before a cab was called on their behalf.
