Joe Gets No Respect

JaysI just read an interesting article about Joe Carter.

The former Toronto slugger said baseball fans and historians rank his Game 6, bottom-of-the-ninth, three-run homer off Philadelphia closer Mitch Williams below moments such as Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit homer off Dennis Eckersley in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

Highlights of big home runs by Bill Mazeroski and Bobby Thomson often get shown far more than Carter's shot, too.

"Mine, it will make the top 10 but it's never No. 1, it's never been No. 2, it's always been in the middle of the pack," Carter said Thursday. "Had it been for the Yankees or the Dodgers, then I think it would have been No. 1. But because it was in Toronto, it has not gotten the respect that I think it really should deserve."

Just last June I wrote about Joe's homer ranking 7th on the Best Damn Sports Show Period's most memorable baseball plays.

This play is better than 7th. It oughta be #1.

Mike, I think you and I are the only two who see this eye to eye. It should be number one by a mile. Its not even close. It was a WORLD SERIES WINNING, not just a game winning, Walk off home run with runners on base against the supposed best closer in baseball that year.
Joe deserves Hall of Fame consideration for that and for catching the World Series winning out the year before. The only player to ever do that period not to mention back to back years.

Add me to your list of guys who see eye to eye on this. Without a doubt this should be the #1 moment in baseball. Because it happened north of the border, it is not.

BBM, we don't see eye-to-eye on one thing. I don't think a moment should get you in the hall of fame. Joe was consistently very, very good, but he didn't put up hall of fame numbers. Still, if you wanted 100 RBIs and 30 HRs, Joe was your man.

I also don't think Paul Henderson should get in the hall for one goal, no matter how significant it was.
