The Odds Ain't Good

JaysWith the Blue Jays on a ten game winning streak, it's okay to dream. We all ponder "what if" scenarios and wonder what might happen if we keep this up. After all, anything is possible, right?

Wrong. Ken Roberts has created an "odds of the making the playoffs" website. He calculates our Jays now have a 1.6% chance of making the playoffs.

If we go undefeated the rest of the season, we're in. If we lose a single game, we have a 99.1% chance. If we lose two games, we have an 88.5% chance, and if we lose three games we have a 63% chance. But, should we go 14-4 in our remaining 18 games, our odds of making the playoffs plummets to 32.7%.

Going 13-3 from here on means we'll have won 25 of our last 28 games and we'll still only have a 63% chance of advancing to the playoffs. In layman's terms, it's too damn late. Where the hell was this in June?

Hey... that's not fair.... Mathematics doesn't belong in September. hahaha.... Well... I still believe. I've seen Major League and The Rookie too many times to hear the fat lady warming up in the halls yet.

All we Jays fans have to do is remember 1987.

Mike, We can remember a lot more, Last years Mets meltdown, The Oakland A's from a few years back, every year it seems there is a team that gets hot at the right time. This year the Jays are half way to doing it. The odds are slim but in the Infamous words of Han Solo "Don't tell me the odds"
Lets just enjoy the rest of this season and at the very least, they caught and have a very good chance of finishing ahead of the New York Yankees.

Like Stephanie and Megan....I still believe!

"The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and what could be again." - James Earl Jones in Field of Dreams (1989)

As a red sox fan, i've been very impressed with the Blue Jays in the second half. If they could ever stay healthy they would be right in the middle of everything. That said, this is still a big 4 game series for both teams. It's always good to hear other fans opinions on my blog, feel free to check it out at:

I'm watching the game now and it's not our night.

When it's sweep or die with four games at Fenway, you're already in a whack of trouble.
