Hairspray

A Movie ReelHairspray: 6.5 out of 10.

I don't think Hairspray was made for dudes like me. They sing an awful lot, and I'm not really a musical kind of guy. By the time Travolta and Walken were singing to each other, I had had enough. Don't get me wrong, some of the songs are okay and it's a pretty likable flick, but my favourite thing about Hairspray had nothing to do with the story.

Hairspray has awesome shots of West Toronto. That opening sequence showing a Baltimore neighbourhood gave us a great glance at Roncesvalles. We played a great Baltimore.

Roncesvalles? Now I have to see it. I hope that in the future more films will be set in Toronto. With so many interesting neighbourhoods and growing international presence, it should be a matter of time.

I saw the original hairspray (non musical) and really liked it. I thought Divine was perfect as the role of the mother.

John Travolta bothered me. The mother in the original didn't look like a guy dressed as a girl. You just assumed it was a girl.

John Travolta couldn't pull that off. You could see him through all that make up.

It's so hard to describe why I cannot stand his character. :(

I will have to make an attempt at watching the movie. I have a feeling I'm going to keep going back to the original to watch it.
