My Own Prison

musicIn addition to My Hootastic Cross to Bear I must confess to another guilty pleasure from the 1990s. I'm throwing this out there in the hopes that my full disclosure will absolve me from all sin.

In 1997, Christian-ish rock band Creed released their debut album My Own Prison. Creed had a string of hits, but they were sort of like Nickelback before there was a Nickelback, so it wasn't cool to be a Creed fan. Were they trying to sound like Pearl Jam? Were they bible thumpers? We didn't know but we knew it was wrong.

As much as I tried to fight the hooky rock sounds of Creed, I couldn't help but really dig "What's This Life For", one of the hits off of My Own Prison. It was the guiltiest of pleasures that climaxed with me watching Creed headline an Edgefest one July night at Molson Park in Barrie.

I just realized I've confessed to this guiltiest of pleasures before. Now what's worse, me digging that Hootie track or the fact I'll still sing along to this Creed song if I hear it piping through my local Walmart?

Yikes Mike Creed is the reason I can't stand Nickleback if you follow that...

There are places you can go and they can help you. They will program that out of you and make it all better... :)

Ok, that's it. I'm tired of being heckled on the street. I shall reveal no further guilty pleasures!

And I'm definitely not about to admit I've seen Nickleback in concert... twice.

Haha. Really enjoyed the title of the previous confession... quite appropriate.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world, I enjoyed Creed as well. My Own Prison, Human Clay, Weathered... yep, I bought 'em, what about it?

I got your back on Nickelback, too. Is it somehow not cool to like a popular band or something? I mean, even better than Hootie or Creed, they're Canadian. Support your country!

I was a big fan of early Nickleback - pre-How You Remind Me Nickleback.

After "How You Remind Me" the hits were still sorta catchy and fun but mainly sad (Photograph, anyone?) and cringe-worthy.

No, it's not okay to like Nickelback anymore. That's just the way it is, Cancon or not.

Oh no, don't stop now, we want more revelation, it makes us feel better about yourselves. We love you and just want you to know we are laughing with you not at you. Okay I need to be honest, some of us may be laughing... never mind :)

Creed and Wal-Mart have tons in common. Lowest common denominator. People with kids who shop at Wal-Mart is just something beyond my comprehension. So is low prices at the expense of slave wages. Just thought I would share in the hopes that maybe just one person becomes a more informed consumer.

Spoken like a true child-less bachelor...

Have you seen the episode of Bullshit re: Wal-Mart is evil propaganda?

I'm not here to defend the big W, but just about everything is a little evil if you dig deep enough. Creed, Nickelback and WalMart!

Your argument is whether or not I have watched a TV episode? No sorry, I stay informed in other ways. Wal-Mart wages is just the icing on the cake, champ. Enjoy the Wal- Mart in YOUR neighbourhood. Speaking of TV, there's a very funny South Park on the matter which explains it all in ways even stupid Americans can understand.

So you put down me referencing a tv show about the matter by referencing a tv show?

Out of curiosity, do you think all Americans are stupid or just the poor ones who shop at WalMart?

Dude in most cases I see to each their own but certain companies like Wal-Mart have such poor overall business ethics that's it's just sickening. Wal-Mart is such a case. Let's just say I hope you never get hurt in one, for starters. I'll leave the slave labour issues alone. Im not going to convert you anyway..

I don't think all Americans are stupid, such a thing would be stupid to think.

As for the TV reference, I thought that was funny. Pointing out your poor argument and then finding an equally sill pop culture refernce to back my own arguments up.

Seriously, though, if you can't see why Wal-Mart sucks, that's a shame, and let's agree to disagree. That said, I stand by my comments about people with kids shopping there.. I care about the world we are leaving them.. and I care about the little guy.

That makes me a bad person? No, but I get a lot of grief. Sometimes daving a buck or two is just not worth it; if you do the research you'll realize it.
