Our First Family Day Beckons

Published by Toronto Mike on February 17, 2008 @ 19:11 in Miscellaneous

ontarioIt's just sinking in that this Family Day thing is for real. For those of you reading outside of Ontario, Family Day was an election promise by provincial Liberal Party leader Dalton McGuinty. McGuinty got reelected and made it official on October 11, 2007. Tomorrow will be our very first Family Day which means I don't have to go to the office.

Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba already have a Family Day holiday in February. We needed a day off in February as a statutory holiday between New Years Day and Good Friday. Now I just need somebody to promise me a stat day in June and we're all set.

Does everybody out there in Ontario get tomorrow off or are some of you getting the short end of the shaft?

Booner, enjoy the day off...I'll be at work.

Explain to me how that works. It's a stat day, right? Don't they have to give you the day off or are you already getting your alloted "holiday days"?

Exemptions can be found here: http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/family/faq.html

Because our company gives us 9 days of holdiays (stats & 2 floaters) - 1 of our floater days is used for tomorrow.
We had no choice. Now we only have 1 day to take at our discretion.

I guess I got lucky. I have those two floater days as well, but I didn't have to burn one to take tomorrow off.

It's President's Day here in the US. Had I not gotten promoted back in August, I'd have had to go to work anyway. Now I get all the holidays off.

The hospital I work at just negotiated our new union contract and we were given Family Day as a Stat but as a nurse I would be expected to work if I was scheduled and then given off another day in lieu. Works for me.

I'm off but My nephew and his wife have to work. She works for Service Canada and he's in the Army. Both federal Goverment who don't recognize the holiday. There kids are off school of course and the regular daycare is closed so this "holiday" costs them money.

I'm working, but then I work through all holidays if they fall on my shift. Downside to working in a 24/7 operation. The upside is that I get holiday pay up the wazoo. :)

Plenty of people have to work despite the stat.

Start with the local weather man, and work your way down.

Ok, but like Jill or Ajax Mike, they get a lieu day or are compensated for the sacrifice.

As long as your job falls under the Ontario ESA you're entitled to this 9th stat day.

Somebody has to report the local weather, even on Christmas Day, right?

You know I think the US needs to adopt that policy and enforce it a little more stringently, there should be one long weekend every month. One holiday every month. A lot of people down here are lucky to get two weeks off per year, what would be wrong with 12 holidays per year.

Buffalo Boy, it's not much better up here. We're not Sweden with their gobs of vacation days.

In addition to vacation days and floater days and all that jazz, here are the statutory holidays we get in Ontario.

* New Year's Day
* Family Day
* Good Friday
* Victoria Day
* Canada Day
* Labour Day
* Thanksgiving Day
* Christmas Day
* Boxing Day (December 26)

Most companies also recognize Civic Day in August for a grand total of 10.

Yeah, indeed someone does, even on Xmas day.. and yes I am sure they get compensated, a lieu day, or double time or some such thing.. depends where and what I guess..

G'nite!

They moved my Remembrance Day holiday to Family Day, so I got nothing new out of it.

What bothered me was how all those retailers tried to make Family Day into a massive commercial thing. I think people should just use it to spend time with family, rather than spending money.

Had to work it. To Corus Entertainment's credit, as a federally-regulated industry they could have ignored it but they made it a stat. But it's radio ratings (when isn't it?) and we had to work. Although I noticed the FAN was all ESPN on their morning show.
