A Sign of the Times

?Yesterday, while playing frisbee with a couple of people approximately eight years my junior, I made the following comment. "In the immortal words of Corey Hart, we must never surrender!"

Not only was this reference completely lost on them, but they had absolutely no idea who Corey Hart was. This was a real eye opener for me. Is there really a generation of adult people who haven't heard of Corey Hart? Do people in their early 20s avoid 80s Cancon like the plague? Wasn't "Never Surrender" our national anthem for a brief period of time in the mid-80s?

It's official. I'm getting old.

I showed this list to a few of the younger crew I work with and they hadn't heard of 1/2 of them.
Music more than any other medium can be the catalyst to remind us of a certain, time, place or person.

I was born in '83 and I and most of my friends know who Cory Hart is. In fact he and other peple of that era, like Gino Vanelli and Allan Frew/Glass Tiger are often the butt of our jokes.

I distinctly remember one of my high school teachers saying "Who do you think you are, Corey Hart?" whenever someone wore sunglasses to class. Everyone knew what she was talking about.

However, it seems that the cut-off year is around 1985-86 for people who know nothing about the 80's.
